Samar Hest

About: Samar is a user of magic, though her abilities are unfocused, she is untrained, and she doesn’t subscribe to established methods of casting spells. She draws on an unknown source of energy to power her magics. She does not draw on the two moons or the four elements like many witches, nor does she draw on the power of a god like priests, or even her own personal energy reserves like her adoptive mother, Grace, does. She is able to manipulate energies in methods generally referred to as sorcery. Her spells often go awry, and she has little confidence in her abilities, but once she has successfully mastered a casting she is able to repeat it effortlessly (something most others cannot do). Her magic does not fit easily into any one school of magic.

Bennick and Grace Hest are Samar’s adoptive parents. They took her in when she was still a baby. She never knew her biological mother. Samar is the biological daughter of Samarath Goodwell, a woman who left the town of Keth shortly after her daughter was born. Samarath’s departure was shrouded in mystery and controversy which has carried over to the daughter she abandoned. For years Samar had believed her mother had died, rather than leaving Keth, but as she approaches adulthood she is finding out the truth.

Her father is a woodworker and her mother is a hearth-witch. The Hest’s live on the east side of the Talist river in an area of Keth associated with poverty. The Hest’s are a poorer family, but they make do and find the money for family priorities like Samar’s education.

Due to the stories about her birth and the circumstances of her mothers supposed death, Samar has no real friends. She sometimes associates with youths her own age, but she is not part of any inner group of friends.

She sometimes thinks she is in love with Tomas Bence, a local lad she’s known nearly her entire life, but generally she believes she is still too young for such nonsense. Besides, her circumstances preclude such a match.

Description: Samar is a mischievous and curious young woman sixteen years of age. She has dark hair that cannot seem to be tamed and a slight build. Depending on how she dresses Samar can easily be mistaken for a young boy. Samar is often overlooked by others as being unremarkable and nondescript, but this is part magic, and part nature. She prefers not to draw attention to herself. Samar can be quite pretty when she bothers to tend to her appearance. She seldom bothers.
